Copie of Antonius Stradivarius
Albert Knorr (1876-1939) was part of a famous violin making family. His father Albert Knorr Senior and his brother Paul were both master violin makers. Albert learned much from his father and also studied with Max Dolling before starting his own workshop in Markneukirchen, Germany. This instrument is a great representation of the quality and workmanship found in Markneukirchen, which was the hub of instrument making for over three centuries. The violin is in excellent condition for a 100 year old violin. We carved a new set of ebony pegs, cambered the ebony fingerboard, and changed out the old tailpiece with a new German Wittner tailpiece. The instrument has an orange/red/brown oil varnish hand drawn all on a golden clear ground. The varnish is tastefully antiqued, and the back has some simulated wear, with simulated hand wear on the top plate upper quad and lower quads. The highly flamed maple back and ribs and the beautiful, even grain of the spruce top are complemented by the Stradivarius sound holes and the lovely classic Strad arching, which helps the instrument generate power.
Corpus 336.0 mm., Major Width 192.0mm., Minor Width 153.0 mm., Rib Height 28.0 mm.
The violin has a luxurious, focused sound, well-balanced with a little bit of guts on the bass end. I love the meatiness of the G and D strings. The low end has a beautiful clean response, and the treble side puts out as well, ringing sweet with ample power. The top is clean and rings up into higher positions. This instrument will make an excellent violin for that serious player looking for a great fractional instrument. The overall sound on this instrument is a knockout!
