Germany was and still is a hub for violin making and bow making. This Anton Schroetter violin was made in the Mittenwald area, southern Germany, in the early 1970’s. It is considered a trade violin and was made to be sold to the US or Canada. The violin has all the good bones, ebony fittings Stradivari style and has no issues. The top plate is spruce, straight grain, and the back is two-piece maple with medium-width very generous flame. The ribs, neck, and scroll match in degree of flame. There is an ebony crown on the tongue and the pegs have brass pins to help set off the violin. The violin shows some patina in the varnish, but this does not distract from the beauty of the violin. The varnish is a golden orange/brown on an amber base.
Corpus 359.0 mm., Major Width 206.0 mm., Minor Width 166.0 mm., Rib Height 30.0 mm.
The instrument has a big sound. The sound explodes off the strings. The tone is slightly covered and not too bright, which I like. The G and D strings have sustain and the response happens quickly. The top two strings put out the same level of power and are very pleasant to have under the ear. The instrument is a sleeper. A great sounding violin, German made, at a good price. The violin resonates even with a light touch in your bow and is easy to play on.
