IPE – on the butt of the bow

Vanderson Schaeffer was born in the city of Vitoria, Brazil in 1982. He has been a bow maker for the firm Arcos Brasil since 1998. The Arcos Brasil firm employs over 11 bow makers. Vanderson is known in our shop for his outstanding cello bows, the strength in these bows, and his violin bows. He spent two years in study at Pierre Guillaume’s bow shop in Brussels. This is where he refined his skill set and soaked in as much as possible in the art of bow making. He returned to his home area for family and the source of the wood, where it all starts for a great bow. The wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. For 280 years ipe and pernambuco wood has always come from Brazil. The ebony wood used in the making the frog of a bow grows in Africa and certain coastal parts of India. Vanderson’s jewelry work is exceptional and the tolerances he gets on the fittings is a Wow! Attention to detail seems to have been drummed into him. There are no exceptions, even on his nickel mounted sticks. I study all the bows he has made for the shop and learn new things in his incrementation of the stick and the way he transitions the bow from octagonal section atthe frog to a round or egg-shaped bow. His bows are stamped “V. SCHAFFER – BRASIL.” It is a firm bow, and the color of the wood is a chocolate brown. The bow is in octagonal section and finished in nickel mountings. The wood is ipe and is stamped as such on the butt of the bow. The stick simply has a naturally oiled finish with the winding in nickel silver and a leather thumb. The bow is new to the shop. Nickel, octagonal section, ipe wood. A player can’t go wrong with one of his sticks.
