T. CHAGAS – BRASIL
IPE – on the butt of the bow

Claudecir Carlesso Chagas was born in the city of Joao Neiva, Brazil in 1981. He started his journey in the bow firm in 1995 assisting other makers and then for the next two decades as a finishing bow making specialist. He goes by Tiogus. He has been making his own bows since 2014. His biggest influences in the bow world are his two older brothers and Vanderson Schaeffer. Tiogus is a maker in the firm Arcos Brasil. Arcos employs over 12 bow makers. He is known by Mr. Judd for his consistent detailed work. Nothing too fancy, but every bow of his has great bones. I say well made. As an artist he knows and feels how to make the stick tapered starting behind the head and gradually growing in size. Bow making is an art, and Tiogus senses what the wood can handle thickness-wise for each bow. Ipe wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. The ebony used in making the frog only grows in Africa and certain parts of India. Tiogus Chagas was skilled as a young guy. His hand work is fantastic, and he makes many nickel and silver bows for the shop. His bows are stamped “T. CHAGAS – BRASIL.” The stick is nice and strong, firm and round in section. The wood name, ipe, is also stamped on the butt of the bow so there is no confusion with the other wood used in making bows – pernambuco. It is a chocolate brown colored stick with a hint of orange color. I love the stick, nothing fancy, just spot on workmanship. The finish is only oiled and is natural for most bows. The last 15.0 cm of the bow is in octagonal section for the bow to accept the frog. The ebony of the frog is nice older stock. Dark and polished nicely. The frog is nickel silver mounted and is a Parisian eye model. The heel is two pieces of silver, and the fittings are held in place with pin work. The winding is nickel with a leather thumb grip to capture the silver at the frog end. The pearl slide is stunning, especially when you are in some powerful light. The bow is new, in excellent condition, and just received into the shop in 2026. An excellent playing stick, full of handwork, and exceptionally well made. The bow is ready to find a home in someone’s case.
