STRAUSS A VIENNA

Bows made between the World Wars and especially after World War I were purposely named to hide the fact that the bow was made in Germany. This bow has no origin stamp on the frog nor the stick.

Pernambuco bows in our shop’s completed bow drawers we call oil paintings. Bows that are made of carbon fiber we call nice prints. This handmade oil painting is pushing 90 years. Will this bow hold up with a youngster? You bet! It is strong and will last another century even with a little wear from a teenager. The bow has some historical significance in that there are no markings of origin and who doesn’t know Strauss. The bow could possibly be a little older than what I list it as, but I’m sticking to my dates above.

The pernambuco has beautiful orange/brown color, a player will notice the clarity in the color and its sleek gradual look. I cut a new tip in tip armor for the facial. The bow is a half-lined bow (not fully silvered around the heel of the frog) made for the trade in the 1930s, and round in section. The bow is in very good condition. I also gave the stick a new nickel winding, leather thumb grip, and replaced a mother-of-pearl eye in the frog on the player’s side. The pearl in the slide is beautiful, full of color. It was hard to find a match for the eye to replace. The bow is light and is light in the hand.
