Friedrich August Glass II Violin- Klingenthal circa 1850 – WOW!

This violin was made just like you play- with your hands. Friedrich August Glass the 2nd worked in Klingenthal, Germany, the Vogtland region, from 1830-1860. He was always pursuing and improving the violin design and sound typically coming from the Saxon region. He received a gold medal in London, England for excellent work. This violin shows all hand work and Friedrich August’s own Klingenthal Stradivarius modeling. A mixture of Italian modeling and Stainer modeling.

The varnish is a very transparent brown on an amber ground. The shape and design show first class workmanship and the violin is in beautiful condition. We have meticulously gone over the entire violin, bushing all eight holes, new ebony pegs, given the violin a new fingerboard and nut, cut a new soundpost, and a Despiau Grade B bridge. The violin has no issues and is a Wow! in my book, ready for the next generation of players. The wear on the fingerboard was excessive and a major reason for replacing the ebony. The woods on the one-piece back violin are choice. To think not one electrical tool touched this instrument is another Wow! I like to lay into an instrument to test it. I know an aggressive player will make this violin rock.

Friedrich August Glass the 2nd had a talent for making and getting the violin to produce a gorgeous sound. If you’re looking for a fantastic violin to play, this is it. A mature tone, leaning to the darker side, the violin has guts where you want it and is brilliant and very responsive on all its registers. The sound of the violin is more than powerful; it is rich and responsive sound that jumps off the strings. The violin responds with just the slightest touch from the bow. The sustain and clarity of sound also makes me notice the violin. The E and A strings sing. The treble side is sweet and full of old-world character. The beauty of the sound stems from an inner tonal strength rich in flavor. The overtones are warm and full of color; fall colors, earthy.
