IPE – on the butt of the bow
This fine gold mounted violin bow is handmade by F. Correira in 2025. He lives in Brazil (American Spelling,) and works under the umbrella of the fine workshops of Arcos Brasil, LLC where 11-12 bow makers work for them. The bow is a Special Edition gold mounted bow made of Ipe wood. The Ipe is in round section, comes from Brazil, and for this stick is choice. It is firm and plays exceptionally well. For me it handles everything: off the string articulations and it brought out the bottom end of violins easily, no effort. The bow is balanced and totally easy to play with. The tip of the bow is erect, very masculine in style. The knife work in the chamfers is right on and carries slightly into the stick itself. The color of the stick is a deep orange/brown, oiled after the stick is incremented, and finished and done before the frog is fitted and then haired. The frog is handmade, gold mounted, and features a large mother-of-pearl eye surrounded immediately by a .9 mm gold ring. The workmanship is beautiful to see. The gold heel and lining are held in place by fine pin work, no screws. The frog is Arcos Brazil’s own model with the large 8.0 mm eye center on the frog. Correia’s jewelry work and bow calibrations are spot on. The bow feels awesome in the hand. The pearls in both eyes and on the slide have an array of color. The winding is silver tinsel mixed with a gold tinsel winding captured at the frog end with a lizard leather thumb grip. The frog finishes out with a three-piece gold/ebony/gold button completed with a pearl eye on the end of the button. This is a bow any serious player will want to try and possibly add as an investment, not only as an option for creating sound.
