GERMANY – off centered flat on butt of bow
We have a fine Grimm workshop violin bow circa 1850-1870. Carl Grimm (1794-1855) was a German bowmaker, violin maker, and musician. He was born in 1794 in Berlin, Germany. He was quite respected in Berlin as a musician and a maker. Later in his life he became an instrument maker to the Court in Berlin. He established a prominent violin shop in Berlin 1825 which continued in operation until the turn of the 20th century. Grimm continued working until he died in 1855. His successor in the shop was another fine maker Carl Hellmig (1828–1855), who began working in the Grimm shop in the late 1830’s.
This bow is very good to excellent condition. The bow is original in all of parts except the nickel winding and new leather thumb grip which were replaced because they were too far gone. The bow is pernambuco, round in section, with nickel silver fittings. The head of the stick is beautiful with a slight swan shape and great knife work in the chamfers. Nothing was overdone in the carving, very functional and classic German work. The camber begins quickly after the head, and the stick is thin in its gauge. The pernambuco is old stuff, choice pernambuco with a very tight grain wood in a darker orange/brown color. The frog is considered blind eye model and the mother-of-pearl slide is the entire length of the frog until it butts up to the heel. The heel and the lining are held in place with pin work. The button is a solid cap with two fine turns in the collar. The bow is light in the hand and has great fight. It is a Wow stick! Waiting for a player to fall in love with it.
