GERMANY – butt of the bow only

We have a well-made German violin bow. The maker of the stick is unknown; it was made in a German workshop in which the master maker or owner of the shop did not allow the individual workers to place their names on the bow. Working with the stick and hairing the bow I feel the stick is a Wow! The bow is nice enough that the one who created the stick should have gotten some credit. The string industry flourished in German before World War II because of the quality of instruments being made and exported. Violinmaking also brought with it other related businesses like string producers, lumbering wood industries, importers and exporters working rail and water systems, case makers and many bow makers who opened workshops too. Even though the maker or shop is unknown the bow shows me nice work and craftsmanship at a high level.

The bow is pernambuco, nickel-silver mounted in octagonal section. The frog is a Parisian eye model frog with a colorful mother-of-pearl slide and eyes. I have gone over the bow adding a new tip in tip armor to the facial and a leather thumb grip. The winding is original to the bow, and the lining is attached to the frog with pin work, not screws – very nice to see. This stick is easy to handle and strong to boot. Nice and firm, a good player. Just nice German craftsmanship.
