If you ask any string player about their tools of the trade they will speak of their violin for sure, but chances are that the conversation will quickly turn to their bow, how it’s perfect for this piece, or the way it draws a particular tone quality from their violin, or perhaps that it’s not quite right for their hand or the right match for their instrument. Good instrumentalists know that the deceptive intrigue of bow is in fact essential to the magnificent sound and energy a good player derives from a celebrated instrument. The bow is so very important. Bows are varied and vibrant as much as any violin; they are commanded by an artist. The bow in a player’s right hand focuses on the articulations, speed, angle, and striking the string, creating a mature sound.

This bow is made from wood from Brazil called brazilwood. This is a select-premium brazilwood stick. The wood is older, dark chocolate in color, and incremented from the head down to the winding very well. The bow is small in its girth, not thick, meaning the density of the wood is good; the maker was able to keep the girth off the stick and still keep it firm. Brazilwood only grows in Brazil, and it is harvested in the province of Pernambuco. The brazilwood logs would have been harvested in the mid 1900’s, and transported by boat out of Brazil. The logs are then cut and stored in barns or a maker’s home for 15 to 20 years to get plenty of natural drying time to season the wood. Then a piece would have been selected by the maker to create the bow. This is an excellent bow. This is an excellent bow for the price.
