Vanderson Schaeffer SARTORY REPLICA Silver Mounted Cello Bow – 2026

Vanderson Schaeffer was born in the city of Vitoria, Brazil in 1982. He has been a bow maker for the firm Arcos Brasil since 1998. Arcos Brasil employs more than 11 bow makers. He is known in our shop for his outstanding cello bows and violin bows. To study more in his craft Vanderson spent two years at the Pierre Guillaume bow workshop in Brussels. He returned to his home area for family, and for the wood.

The stick is where it all starts for a great bow. Fantastic wood, great maker, fine product in an art that is four arts in one; woodworking, leather work, silver work as a jeweler, and hair dressing. A maker places 150-160 horse hairs into a bow held by fine knots and three perfectly cut wooden plugs. Not one of the hairs may be tangled. Ipe wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. Ipe and pernambuco wood for bows has for 280 years always come from Brazil. The ebony in the frog only grows in Africa and certain parts of India. Vanderson’s attention to detail is more than noticeable. His work is extraordinary; I study and learn from each bow he has made for the shop. They are exceptional. His bows are stamped “V. SCHAFFER – BRASIL.”

This bow is sterling silver mounted and is a handmade “Replica Sartory” cello bow. Eugene Sartory (b. 1871 in Mirecourt – d. 1946 Paris) was one of the most famous Parisian bow makers. The stick is made from Ipe from Brazil, and it is a firm stick in round section. The grain in the stick is dense and the incrementation throughout the stick is incredible. The wood in the bow is awesome, having strength, flexibility, and balance. There was no need for excess girth in the bow. The head is a Sartory model and the camber of the bow occurs like a real Sartory, directly after the head. The stick color is amber/light orange/brown. It is hand rubbed with linseed oil to bring out that satin look. The bow begins in octagonal section for 195.0 mm at the frog end and then transitions to the round. It is completed with a silver mounted Parisian eye frog with the traditional solid Sartory silver octagonal cap. The frog has fine pin work in the heel, button, and the lining. Vanderson’s bow work is at the highest level of craftsmanship. The head, the tip, and wood choice is off the charts – beautiful in look and strength. The winding is silver and finished with a lizard leather thumb grip. The bow is balanced and handles very well. This handmade bow is new and is in excellent condition.
