V. SCHAEFFER – BRASIL
IPE – on the butt of the bow

Vanderson Schaeffer was born in the city of Vitoria, Brazil in 1982. He has been a bow maker for the firm Arcos Brasil since 1998. Arcos Brasil employs more than 12 bow makers. He is known in our shop for his outstanding cello bows and violin bows. To study more in his craft Vanderson spent two years at the Pierre Guillaume bow shop in Brussels. He returned to his home area for family and the wood, where it all starts for a great bow. The wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. Ipe and pernambuco wood for the sticks for 280 years has always come from Brazil. The ebony in the frog only grows in Africa and certain parts of India.

Vanderson’s attention to detail is more than noticeable. His work is exceptional, as I study all of the bows he has made for the shop. His bows are stamped “V. SCHAFFER – BRASIL.” The stick is firm and made in round section. The wood name is ipe; it is also stamped on the butt of the bow. It is a chocolate color stick with just a hint of orange/brown. The finish is only oiled, and the bow has transparency and clarity to the grain. The last 25.0 cm of the bow is in octagonal section for the bow to accept the frog. The bow is mounted in sterling silver, and the heel and lining are held in place with silver pin work. Another level up in bow making. The ebony frog is a Parisian eye model with a pearl slide and eyes that have a lot of colors and shine. The winding is sterling with a leather thumb grip to capture the silver at the frog end. The bow is in Wow! condition, new to the shop and made for us. The frog is completed with a three-piece end button in sterling and ebony with a pearl end. A great playing bow made by Vanderson, a modern Brazilian maker. A fine bow ready for a serious player.
