V. SCHAEFFER – BRASIL

Vanderson Schaeffer was born in the city of Vitoria, Brazil in 1982. He has been a bow maker for the firm Arcos Brasil since 1998. Arcos Brasil employs over 12 bow makers. He is known in our shop for his outstanding cello bows and violin bows. Vanderson spent two years at Pierre Guillaume’s bow shop in Brussels. This is where he refined his skill set and soaked in as much as possible in the art of bow making. He returned to his home area for family and the source of the wood, where it all starts for a great bow.

The wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. For 280 years ipe and pernambuco wood have come from Brazil. The ebony wood used in the making of the frog of a bow grows in Africa and certain coastal parts of India. Vanderson’s attention to detail is more than noticeable; even on his nickel mounted bows, his work is excellent. I study all the bows he has made for the shop and learn new things in his incrementation of the stick and the way he transitions the bow from octagonal section at the frog end to a round or egg-shaped bow. His bows are stamped “V. SCHAFFER – BRASIL.” It is a firm bow, and the color of the wood is a deep orange/brown. The bow is in round section and finished in nickel mounts. The wood is ipe but is not stamped on the butt of the bow. The bow has oil finish to the stick with the winding is nickel silver with a leather thumb. The bow is new to the shop, and I always recommend Vanderson’s bows. Nickel, round section, ipe wood. A very good playing bow.
