Vanderson Schaeffer was born in the city of Vitoria, Brasil in 1982. He has been a bow maker for the firm Arcos Brasil since 1998. Arcos Brasil employs over 11 bow makers. He is known in our shop for his outstanding cello and violin bows. To study more in his craft Vanderson spent two years at the Pierre Guillaume bow shop in Brussels. He returned to his home area for family and the wood. The wood is where it all starts for a great bow. The wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. Ipe and pernambuco wood for the sticks in bow making have come from Brazil for over 280 years. The ebony in the frog only grows in Africa and certain parts of India.
Schaeffer’s attention to detail is noticeable and I have studied all the bows he has made for the shop. His bows are top notch in workmanship. His bows are branded “V. SCHAFFER – BRASIL.” The bow is firm and round in section. It is an excellent choice of wood in making this silver mounted cello bow. The wood is Ipe, also stamped on the butt of the bow. It is chocolate in color and leans towards a darker orange/brown color. The finish is only oiled, and the bow has clarity. The grain is tight in its growth giving the bow a firm feel. Nice, I really like that in a cello bow. The last 24.0 cm of the bow is octagonal section for the bow to accept the frog. The frog is mounted in sterling silver, and the heel and lining are held in place with fine silver pin work. The ebony frog is a Parisian eye model with a pearl slide and eyes that ooze a little bit of color and shimmer. The winding is sterling with a goat thumb leather. The bow is in excellent condition and is completed with a three-piece end button in sterling and ebony with a pearl end. This is a very fine playing stick, well made by a fine maker. Thanks Vanderson.
