Non-Stamped Floral Frog German Trade Violin Bow- Superb Workmanship circa 1965
$900.00

You may just be looking for a much better playing pernambuco violin bow- this is it. The stick is firm and the bow handles very well. A bow with superb craftsmanship-this is it. You may be looking for a sterling silver bow – this is it. You may be looking for a sleeper, no famous maker’s name but a very good playing bow with gorgeous wood, at a good price– this is it. A German stick about my age with traditional pernambuco wood. The wood is choice in its grain and color. Old stuff that must have been laying around and/or hiding in an old workshop. The handmade frog is interestingly different in a stick that plays well. I’ve had this stick piled in a large cardboard box with a few hundred other German bows for close to 40 years. Considering what has happed to pernambuco wood from Brazil in the last three years- complete stoppage of use by the Brazilian government- it is great to see these older bows begin to get completed and ready for sale. All making with pernambuco wood has been halted by the Brazilian government. Makers are scrambling to discover new woods and alternatives.
I have decided to get all my bows in the workshop restored, worked up, haired, and ready for the showroom. The restorations can take many hours and/or weeks. Much of my work gets put on the back burner when customer violins and bows need to be completed. Customers’ items come first. Currently, I’m on a one-a-week bow restoration rate.
The wood in this bow is a beautiful orange/brown color fine-grained pernambuco. The wood is old stock. The bow is light in the hand and easy to handle. Pernambuco specie, round in section, and with a flower petal mother-of-pearl design for the eyes in the frog. The mother-of-pearl slide, which functionally covers the wood frog wedge, and the knotted hair aesthetically displays beautiful pink, green, purple, and blue hues. The endscrew features an octagon of color in the middle portion of the button and its octagon facets are mother-of-pearl and ebony. The mounts are simply sterling, which is very classy. The frog has pin work in the heel of the frog and a small bronze screw to secure the lining to the frog. We have replaced the sterling winding and the thumb leather. Truly, a sleeper– great bow, no stamped name, no stamped origin, firm wood, and should make a violin respond like crazy.
