Lothar Seifert (1932-2015) did his apprenticeship as a bow maker between 1953 and1956 with his father Oskar Seifert, after already completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter. Oskar Seifert (1909-1976) had learned the craft of bow making from A. Renz in Erlbach between 1924 and 1927 and set up his own shop in 1932 in Kirchberg, Germany near Graslitz. Graslitz is now known as Kraslice and is in the Czech Republic. Like so many refugees, the Seifert family was forced to relocate after World War II. Oskar Seifert heard of a small village called Bubenreuth, whose mayor was spreading fliers among refugees calling for makers of musical instruments to settle in his town. They went and have never left. A rebirth of instrument making was occurring there, and he opened his new workshop in 1950 in Bubenreuth. The bows made there by Oskar are simply stamped OSKAR SEIFERT.

After completing his training, Lothar Seifert continued working in his parents’ shop with the help of his father, expanding the workshop until it grew to ten employees. In 1962 he did his master’s examination in bow making under the auspices of HWK in Nuremburg. After his father’s death in 1976 Lothar assumed management of the firm and kept the shop in Bubenreuth, about 30 miles north of the college city of Erlangen. The bows Lothar Seifert personally makes have been stylistically influenced by the work of French Parisian maker A. Lamy. The technical aspects of his bow remain exemplary of the German “school” of bow making. Lothar’s personally handmade sticks are stamped LOTHAR SEIFERT bordered with two stars – just like the bow we have here at the shop. Bows made in the general workshop are stamped W. SEIFERT.

The Seifert bass bow is German model, pernambuco, octagonal in section, and sterling silver mounted. The bow is in excellent condition and has a classic blind eye German frog. I have gone over the entire bow, all original. The bow was cleaned, polished, and then rehaired. This is a WOW! stick. It is firm in its makeup and well thought out in its increments of stick thickness and camber. The pernambuco wood is choice for this professional bow.
