ERICH STEINER

We have a half-lined # 6 bass bow made in Germany from the Steiner workshop. This is a French model bow made of brazilwood. The shop is located just outside the town of Bubenreuth. The town of Bubenreuth became the hub for woodworkers and carvers of all types soon after World War II. Violin, viola, cello, and bass makers relocated there with their entire families. Bow makers like the Steiner family sought out the invitation after World War II to relocate to an area that was looking to welcome instrument makers and bow makers to their village. The area grew and still warrants a stop for players if you’re in Germany.

This bow is new-old stock from 2005. The Steiner family makes bows in pernambuco and in brazilwood. I know two professional bass players that play on Steiner bows in pernambuco, one in the Midwest and one in Upstate New York.

The Steiners are older bows that I have haired over the years and were made in the early 1980’s. This bow is a brazilwood French model bow, half lined, nickel mounted, and round in section. The frog has 10 mm pearl eyes, which also tells me that the bow is a higher-grade piece of brazilwood. The stick is firm in its makeup and easy to handle. The tip is completed in bone, and the winding includes a black thumb leather. If you are looking for a better sound off your bass, getting your bass to speak and resonate differently than with a carbon fiber bow, you need to try this French model bass bow. The bow shows good German workmanship. The Steiner workshop does a very good job with their sticks in both woods. I would put this bow up against any carbon fiber bass bows under $500 and in a blind test fully believe a player would choose this bow. This brazilwood bow gives a player true German craftsmanship at a decent price for a bass bow. The bow, like all our sticks, has fresh hair while the weight for this bow is 128.0 grams. The stick would make a great choice for a younger player looking for a bass bow just a tad lighter than many sticks I see in this price range. This would make a good match for middle school, high school or college player. This bow is a great choice to try on a Shen Model 80, a Shen 88, or a Shen Hybrid bass. Good German bones for a very decent price.
