Stamped:
I purchased this bow many years ago from an estate along with other instruments and bows from a player who passed away in Southern California. The player’s wife told me about two bows her husband had in a special bow case and that the wood came from a large pile of pernambuco at some lumberyard in Los Angeles. It always intrigued me. Yes, the wood on both sticks is identical in strength, grain, and look, as well as the brands that are similar in stature and length, just different names. The second cello bow is stamped E. Sartory A Paris. I purchased the entire collection of the estate back in the late 1990’s. This cellist had nice stuff, French and German cello and violin bows too. These replica cello bows look to me to be by the same hand and the wood is identical pernambuco. Currently, pernambuco is not allowed by the Brazilian government to even leave their country. It is totally restricted, like an endangered species. This stick and the other, both cello bows, were made by no amateur bow maker. The detail on the bow is exacting, made by an experience craftsman, with a famous French maker’s name on the stick. This is not a real Bazin. The brand is very small, all caps, and inverted on the player’s side. The stick has no country of origin stamped on the bow. I believe the maker did this on purpose to obscure origin.
This pernambuco cello bow is a 35–45-year-old piece of history. A replica of a sort that speaks of a fine French bow. The bow is round section, sterling silver mounted, sterling tinsel silver wire for the winding, and a Parisian eye model frog. The stick is completed with a sold silver end cap for the button. The bow is all original with a camber that moves quickly into the stick after the head of the bow. The pernambuco is tight-grained and it is a firm stick which players love. The winding was purposely done in tinsel sterling silver to give a better balance to the bow and to keep the overall gram weight of the bow down. The frog is sterling mounted and the pearl in the slide is striped in various hues. The ring around the small 3.0 mm eyes is slightly smaller at .9 mm., not quite a millimeter in width. Outstanding work. This is a great playing bow and if I knew the exact makers name it would sell for many thousands more. A sleeper for sure, that deserves a good player’s home.
