SAXON GERMANY – on the pernambuco under the frog

This is a violin bow made in 1920’s. Carlo Micelli – Master Art is a tradename used by the firm of C. Meisel workshop in Saxony Germany. Part of the Meisel family came to America, settling in Springfield, New Jersey in the early 1900’s and establishing a string instrument shop. The Meisel family is still in the violin trade with a shop in Stowe, Vermont.

The bow is pernambuco, sterling silver mounted, and in round section. The bow is in excellent condition. I gave the bow a new tip, new silver tinsel winding, and leather thumb. The tinsel replaced what was originally on the bow. Using tinsel instead of pure silver wire kept the gram weight down on the bow which I believe was the original intent for the stick. The ebony frog is French style with exaggerated chamfers, very nice pin work, and round lining that sits in a track bringing the frog slightly closer to the bow. The track also keeps the bow in alignment. The frog has a three-piece button. The stick is pernambuco – nice older stuff. This is a German bow with fine workmanship
