Alfred Knoll bows span three generations of German bow makers. The workshop was founded in 1932 by Alfred Knoll (1909-1980). He was followed by his son Hartmut Knoll, born in 1937, and his grandson Gerald Knoll, who was born in 1968 took over the workshop in 2003. The company makes violin, viola, cello, gamba, and bass bows using various qualities of Brazilwood and pernambuco. The stick is the soul of a bow. It determines, along with the craftsman, how good a bow will be. The Knoll wood selection and the ability to create bows at a high level gives the shop a very good reputation. The Knoll wood pile must be awesome! It was collected for over 8 decades, starting back in the early 1930’s with Alfred, and like Alfred survived a World War and an economic turmoil that we cannot comprehend. He was a tremendous businessman, family man to keep it all together, and craftsman. As a maker, to be able to select from tons of wood makes all the difference in making bows. Bow making is four arts centered around the making of just one bow: woodworking, leather work, jewelry work, and hair dressing. This family not only had all the tools to acquire the resources needed all over the world, but they also had the skill to create bows. The Knoll workshop sits about 25 miles east of Markneukirchen, the making capital of Germany for 3 centuries. Their bows exhibit fine craftsmanship, and they fiercely scrutinize each bow before it leaves the shop.
This 335K model ALFED KNOLL cello bow is made of choice pernambuco wood, in octagonal in section, and is mounted in sterling silver. This is an upper level in the master series cello bows from the Knoll workshop. An excellent cello bow, firm to the teeth, a Wow! German quality in a modern bow. The bow is in excellent condition. The winding is sterling, finished off with a goat thumb leather. The frog is Parisian eye model and is fully lined. The pearl slide has striking color; it sparkles a full spectrum of hues. The three-piece button is finished with a mother-of-pearl dot on the end. The color is dark red/brown pernambuco. It is stunning and strong.
