Vanderson Schaeffer was born in the city of Vitoria, Brazil in 1982. He has been a bow maker for the firm Arcos Brasil since 1998. Arcos Brasil employs more than 11 bow makers. He is known in our shop for his outstanding cello bows and violin bows. To study more in his craft Vanderson spent two years at the Pierre Guillaume bow workshop in Brussels. He returned to his home area for family, and the wood.

The stick is where it all starts for a great bow. Fantastic wood, great maker, fine product in an art that is four arts in one: woodworking, leather work, silver work as a jeweler, and hair dressing. A maker places 150-160 horse hairs into a bow held by fine knots and three perfectly cut wooden plugs. Not one of the hairs may be tangled. Ipe wood grows and is harvested in Brazil. Ipe and pernambuco wood for bows has for 280 years always come from Brazil. The ebony in the frog only grows in Africa and certain parts of India. Vanderson’s attention to detail is more than noticeable. His work is extraordinary; I study and learn from each bow he has made for the shop. They are exceptional. His bows are stamped “V. SCHAFFER – BRASIL.”

If you are going to make fine bow copies you go after the famous makers and devote yourself to every detail. This bow meets those expectations and details. Joseph Alfred Lamy was a famous Parisian bow maker (b. 1850 Mirecourt – d. 1919 Paris). He made bows from 1866 up until a year before his death. He opened his own shop in 1855 in Paris.

This stick is in round section and is choice Ipe wood. The color is amber/brown which is only treated with a clean cotton cloth and linseed oiled. The head or tip is moderately large and Vanderson’s knife skills to create the scalloped chamfers on the back of the head are off the charts good, allowing Vanderson to create the Lamy style head. The bow has single pearl eyes, typical of the Lamy style, and a three-piece sterling button- silver/ebony/silver- with two turns in the collar. The throat is in solid symmetry to the ferrule and is unlike a Sartory bow in where he gives the throat a taper to the upper throat area. This bow carries a beautiful weight that makes the stick easy to handle while the strength of the bow is very evident. Yup, I love the bow. It is a Wow, just waiting for a fine cellist to fall in love with the bow. The frog has fine pin work in the heel, button, and the lining. Vanderson’s bow work is at the highest-level of craftsmanship. The head, the tip, and stick choice are remarkable – beautiful in look and strength. The winding is silver and is finished with a lizard thumb grip.
