Non-Stamped Ironwood Sterling Silver Mounted Cello Bow – circa 1990
$869.00

Are you looking for a great stick and not worried about a name? This is a stick I’ve had in my collection of bows for close to 30 years. I believe the bow was made in Brazil by some of the makers I know who were experimenting with different species. Other species makers are working in are bamboo, ironwood, ipe, and katalox. The bow plays well and comes from a specie of wood not as often used. Ironwood. Ironwood is one of the hardest and heaviest woods in the world. It is found in the North American continent, from Nova Scotia to Manitoba and in America from northern Florida to Texas and up to the eastern part of Wyoming. Ironwood is an expensive wood because of its rarity in large pieces, exceptional durability, and high oil content. The wood is also used for fine knife handles because the wood turns well. This wood is stunning in color, and it’s just oiled. It is firm in its make-up, round in section, and the frog is sterling silver mounted with a Parisian eye model frog. The mother-of-pearl in the eyes and slide jumps in color. The endscrew button is a silver octagonal cap. The bow balances well, with most of the weight in the frog end. The bow has a weight of 79.8 grams. It plays like an expensive bow, handling the low strings with power and off the string articulations too. A great stick for your collection if you’re looking for a sterling silver bow that is way under a thousand dollars and if you’re into wood like me.
