Founded in the United States in 2004, L’Archet Brasil had a mission to distribute bows made by skilled luthiers in Brazil. The business model was that L’Archet would distribute the bows in the U.S. and the bowmakers would retain their independence. L’Archet has since expanded to Europe and Japan. In Portugal, they have five bowmakers and three apprentices.
This bow was handmade in Portugal by Tiogas Surrage for J.R. Judd Violins. He is one of the younger fine bow makers working for L’Archet Brasil. The bow is round section, pernambuco specie, and mounted in sterling silver with sterling winding accented with red silk thread. The ebony frog is a Parisian eye model; mother-of-pearl eyes surrounded by thin silver ring. The slide mother-of-pearl is wild, tiger striped, and full of character. The frog is fully lined, and the bow is finished with a leather thumb grip, bone tip, and the adjuster is a solid silver octagonal cap with a double turn in the collar. It is awesome for me to see some fine bows still being made by Brazilian makers in pernambuco. Excellent craftsmanship by Tiogas- well done.
