This violin a very attractive instrument with a darker varnish. The violin was made in Shanghai, China in 2007 and was brought into our shop from a purchase/buyout of many instruments from a Virginia shop that was closing its doors in 2019. This violin was new – older stock that was never sold back in 2007. The instrument is well made and very comfortable to play. The condition is outstanding, like new, there are no structural or varnish issues at all. We have carved a new bridge and sound post while adding a German Wittner tailpiece. The instrument was made with the typical Strad arching in the plates and the woods feature flamed maple ribs, scroll and two-piece back plate. The grain on the table is medium-straight grain and it is consistent.
The violin sound is smooth, balanced, and pleasant to play. The instrument responded well with a slightly weighted (61.8 – 62.0 gram) violin bow and a moderate amount of bow weight. This violin is a sleeper. I don’t know the violin maker but great to purchase purely on the sound.
