Sandor Nagy 15 3/8″ – SOLD 1/17/2019
An unusually attractive early 20th century Budapest viola. The instrument has a two-piece spruce front and back with some highly professional crack repairs, one on the top plate and two on the back plate.
Viola sizes have changed over the centuries. 19th century violas were dominated by smaller instruments and this instrument, though not as old, has these same characteristics. The viola is 39.2 cm in its corpus length.
The viola shows all the classic features of European construction, but with some extra twists in the corners, beautiful scroll, and the enlarged width of the lower bout at 24.1 cm. These differences give this instrument personality plus. It is big in volume, great response, smooth, and has tremendous sustain. It is not a dark or covered sound, but given its limitations due to its size the sound is very successful.
