Robert Glier Violin, Cincinnati 1913, Made for Rudolph Wurlitzer Co.

Robert Glier was born (1855-1924) in Markneukirchen, Germany. Wow! What a place to be born or grow up in if you’re into string instruments. I’m sure he got his start there in one of the violin shops and Rudolph Wurlitzer found him there in Markneukirchen and offered him a job in America. This area of Germany was the hub a violin making for Germany. Many young apprentices traveled to Markneukirchen to learn the art of violin and bow making. It took guts and faith for a young man in the late 1800’s to travel to America. Glier came and worked for the famous Wurlitzer music firm. Wurlitzer had two major locations, New York City and Cincinnati, OH. Robert was sent to work for Wurlitzer’s of Cincinnati in 1883. He set up his own shop after 1900 but continued to make various grades of instruments that were sold through the Wurlitzer Shop. Glier used local woods to make his instruments, but he also purchased instruments in the white from firms in Mirecourt, France.
Our instrument was made with local woods he would have found in the eastern United States. It is in very good condition with all ebony fittings, a tight grain spruce top and a figured maple back plate. The instrument has a beautiful amber-red/light orange spirit varnish all on a golden yellow ground.
The sound is slightly covered and offers a quick response. The G & D have a rich warmth and this tone remains consistent even in the higher positions. The sustain on the bottom end is very nice and the treble strings ring well. It is smooth and pleasant to listen to. Overall, a great sound for the player that likes to play with a little fire. Some might say a little more aggressive player.
