Lorenzo Bellafontana – Genoa 1967 – SOLD 7/28/2019
This is a hand signed beautiful modern Italian violin. Bellafontana, born in 1906 was a pupil of famous Italian maker Cesare Candi. Bellafontana won many medals in Italy for his tone and a quartet of instruments he made in 1937. He was a registered member of the Association National Liuteria Artistica Italiana. This instrument is full of character and continues to be in very good condition. There are no cracks or damages at all. The violin does have just a tad of the usual craquelure starting on the fine oil varnish.
The sound is powerful, soloist quality, refined, crystal clear with a bright treble that is focused and a beautiful woody lower register. I also describe the sound as responsive and easy on the ear. When you hear this violin you say, wow!
The Italian hand work is found all throughout the violin; in the scroll, purfling, arching, fluting and in the varnished brush work. Lorenzo’s work also made it into Marlin Brinser’s book written in 1978 of Twentieth Century Italian Violin Makers.
