James Omond, Stromness, Scotland 1901
Presenting a violin from James Omond, a former school master who taught himself to make instruments. Despite the mention of (Strad) on the label, the violin clearly shows the hand of an intuitive craftsman and the influence of his Scottish peers. The heavy edges and closely cut (f) holes are some striking features, along with the handsome one-piece back and crackled varnish look. This 115+ year old instrument has aged well and displays a beautiful natural patina. The violin is an excellent instrument with a charming mellow and sweet sound; truly an eccentric violin in the best sense of the word.
