MAITRE-LUTHIER 1950
MEDALLE D’OR – Exposition Universelle 1900
Made in France – PARIS

Charles J.B. Collin-Mezin the son trained under his father who was also named Charles Collin-Mezin. The younger Collin-Mezin spent time working in Paris and the United States before returning to France and taking over the family workshop when his father died. We are pleased to offer this Guarneri model violin from 1950. The violin was actually made in Mirecourt, France (though the firm still used the fancy Parisian label) in the Collin-Mezin atelier in Mirecourt. The violin has a second name, a model named for Leopold Auer, and the instrument was originally sold through the Collin-Mezin firm. The instrument has a beautifully flamed two-piece maple back and matching ribs. The spruce top has a very fine straight grain. The wood choice is way above average, and the instrument is in very good condition.

Corpus 355.0 mm., Major Width 205.0 mm., Minor Width 169.0 mm., Rib Height 31.0 tapering to 30.0 mm at the neck.

The sound is big and deep on the bass side. It has a mature, darker sound that is warm and inviting; it will capture the ear of a demanding player. The E & A strings are charming, brilliant, and clear. The instrument lays well, everything is easy to approach even up into higher positions. This is a beautiful violin with a tremendous sound.
